I Have a Concern: A Parent's Guide to Being Heard at School

I have a concern brochure

Thank you for your interest in the Otsego Local School District. On behalf of the school board, administration, staff and students of our district, I want to welcome you to our website. Our website is designed to be a quick and easy way for you to learn about our school district. Otsego rural school district located in Northwest Ohio and includes students from four villages (Grand Rapids, Haskins, Tontogany, Weston) and the surrounding areas. Otsego employs 180 people and serves more than 1,600 students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. It is a tremendous honor to be the Superintendent of the Otsego Local Schools. We have wonderful students, supportive parents and a fantastic and hard working staff that will do whatever it takes for our students to be successful. We also have a very supportive school board who shares the vision of making it the best school district it can be.

What a great time of the year! Each school year brings anticipation and lots of excitement as to what the school year will bring. I hope everyone is having a great summer and had a chance to rest, relax, and reflect. The entire staff at Otsego has been working hard to prepare for the school year and we look forward to welcoming the student body back on August 21st. I would like to thank the maintenance and custodial staff for their hard work and dedication this summer. Our facilities are looking better than ever and I am extremely proud of their work. I would also like to thank the transportation department for the preparation of our buses for the new year. We have all of our buses certified for the new year and there were ZERO violations. We implemented a new preventative maintenance program and it is paying off! We are ready for another year of safely transporting our students to and from school and events. The propane buses have proven to be phenomenal investment.

As we begin another school year, we look forward to everyone being part of our Otsego Family and encourage you to become involved. We are very fortunate to have a school district, which we can be proud of, with students, staff, parents, and community members coming together to support our vision and mission. I encourage your partnership and support as we prepare every Otsego student for future success.

Coffee Talks with the Superintendent and Treasurer: Come out and meet the new Treasurer, Steve Carroll, this fall. There will be no agenda or registration. It will be an informal conversation myself and Steve. I believe it is important to provide regular opportunities throughout the year to meet with community members to share district accomplishments, new initiatives, and the overall progress of Otsego Schools. We hope to see you there!

Tontogany - September 21st – Otsego Elementary Library @ 8:00 am

Weston - October 19th – Weston Library @ 8am

Grand Rapids - November 16th – Grand Rapids Library Branch @ 8 am

Veteran’s Day Program and Breakfast: Please mark your calendar for November 10th. We will once again hold a Veteran’s Day Program for community members. Before the program, we will offer breakfast to all Senior Citizens and Veterans from the Otsego Community. Breakfast will begin at 8:15 and the program will begin at 9:15. More details will follow on both.

Strategic Plan: During the winter of 2014, Otsego board members, parents, community members, staff, and students came together to develop a 5-year strategic plan. Otsego’s strategic plan has four core initiatives: Increase Academic Excellence, Community Engagement, Enhance Student Culture, and Financial Strength. We have completed three out of the five school years and have accomplished a tremendous amount over the three years. We would like to revisit and re-work the strategic plan starting this fall. A lot has changed in the three years and we believe that coming together again to refocus our work and the priorities of the district would benefit us. The new plan will once again serve as a ‘road map’ to future planning, resource allocation, staff development, and decision making over the next several years. I will communicate this through my weekly update as well, but if you are interested in working with us on this strategic plan, please contact me via email or phone. We will start the conversations this fall/winter.

In closing, I look forward to another exciting year of watching our students learn, achieve, and grow! I wish you all a successful 2017-2018 school year! I look forward to seeing everyone at various events throughout the year.
