What is Section 504?

Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination. In education, it ensures that students with disabilities have equal access to learning by requiring schools to provide necessary accommodations and supports. Unlike special education laws, Section 504 focuses on removing barriers so students can participate fully in school activities alongside their peers.

What is Section 504 Evaluation?

A Section 504 evaluation is a process used to determine if a student has a disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as learning. This evaluation helps decide if the student qualifies for accommodations or support under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which ensures students with disabilities receive equal access to education. Unlike special education under IDEA, Section 504 provides accommodations but not specialized instruction.

What is Section 504 Plan?

A Section 504 Plan is designed to ensure that a student with a disability has equal access to education by providing supports, services, and accommodations in the general education setting. While it does not provide specialized instruction like an IEP, it focuses on removing barriers to learning.
