Weston School Volunteering

THE VOLUNTEER IN THE SCHOOL

Weston has over a hundred volunteers who work with our students each week.  These are many university students, parents and community members who donate time to participate in our tutoring program or help with special events.  We welcome volunteers to our building and appreciate any time that you are willing to help tutor, help maintain our outdoor learning lab, share your interests and skills, and/or assist with special activities.

The things that you see and hear while carrying out your assignments at the school must be considered privileged information, for example, stories about the child’s family life, teacher-child relationships, or your opinion of the child’s actions in school.  You should never discuss these things or the student with friends, other volunteers, or people outside the school.

As in any job, you will need patience, understanding, and a sense of humor.  You will experience frustrations.  There will be some people you will like better than others.  You may see things of which you do not approve.  Please keep in mind that there are problems involved in conducting a classroom and operating a school.  No one else is going to handle problems in the same way you would.  Also, keep in mind that you may not have all the information around which some decisions are made.

Once you are functioning as a part of the school team, the days you come to school will be special days.  Your presence will be counted on by both the children and the teacher.
