Crossing
Guards
Students in grades
five and six have the opportunity to become crossing guards. These
individuals monitor students crossing the streets in the morning as
students arrive at school and in the afternoon during dismissal.
The program is coordinated and monitored by Mr. Calvelage and
supported by WEB (Weston Elementary Boosters). Crossing guards
rotate duties every month. They are invited to a special lunch and
event and are recognized at our awards ceremony at the end of the
school year.
Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl is a team
of 5 & 6 graders (6-8 members). The team is selected following
a written and oral competition. Pracitices are usually held one hour after
school per week. We have eight afterschool matches January through
March with surrounding area school and a tournament is held in April
to determine the league champion.
Office Workers
Office workers are
students from 6th grades that work in the office during
their noon recess. They help answer the phone, pass out mail, and
forward messages. All sixth graders will have an opportunity to
work in the office.
Flag Raisers
Fifth grade students
in Mrs. Hannewald's homeroom take charge of raising, lowering, and
folding the American flag for the Weston building each day. This
duty rotates each week. All students in this classroom have the
opportunity to participate and receive a special recognition at the
awards ceremony at the end of the year.
Store Workers
Weston Elementary has
a small school supply store for students to purchase needed items
such as pencils, erasers, paper, etc. Sixth grade students man the
store outside of the office each morning. All students in these
classrooms may work in the store as the job rotates each week.
Participating individuals receive recognition at the end of the year
awards ceremony.
Reward Activities
Following the
completion of each nine weeks we celebrate with students in grades
one through six the completing homework, following school rules, and
working well with others. These celebrations may include: Ice
cream sundaes, movies, games, inflatables, etc.
Band Program
Fifth and sixth grade
students have the opportunity to become involved in the Otsego
instrumental program. We encourage children to learn to play an
instrument under the tutelage of Otsego Band Director, Rich Dubler
and an excellent team of tutors. Students receive tutoring once per
week during a scheduled music period.
Student Council
This is a student
leadership organization which encourages student participation in
various building and community activities. Member representatives
in grades one through six hold office for a year. Two
representatives are elected in each of these classrooms in October.
Representatives in grades 4 – 6 may run for an office. These
candidates create campaign signs and deliver a speech to the student
body. Students vote for officer holders on a special election day
and all representatives are then inaugurated.
Some of the
activities coordinated by the student council are: car washes for
village fundraising, spaghetti dinner, community service, and many
other activities throughout the year. Our student council advisors
are Mrs. Luidhardt.
