Weston Special Programs

Reading Recovery

First grade students working below grade level in reading may be selected to participate in our Reading Recovery Program.  This is an intensive, research-based program taught by highly trained teachers.  Students in this program receive 30 minutes of one-on-one literacy instruction five days a week. Children are selected for the program following our assessment of all students’ reading and written expression skills.

H.O.S.T.S.

H.O.S.T.S. is a literacy intervention tutoring program for students in grades one through six.  More than one hundred community members and BGSU students volunteer to tutor students in reading and writing each week.  Students in the program receive 30 minutes of tutoring four days each week during the school day.  This program is supervised and coordinated by Reading Teacher, Mrs. Doren.   Students are recommended for the program through our literacy assessment of all students, along with teacher and parent referrals.

America Reads

Through the cooperation and financial assistance of BGSU, the America Reads Grant, and our OhioLiteracy Grant, Weston students have the opportunity to receive one-on-one tutoring afterschool.  The program is available each week, Tuesday through Thursday, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Our America Reads Coordinator is Vinnie Snyder.  Students are recommended for the program by teachers, parents, and self-nomination - contact 419-666-3023.

STARS

STARS is a nationally accredited before/after school program for all Weston students grades K through 6.  Children participate in homework assistance, breakfast, snacks, enrichment activities, physical exercise, and much more with caring supervision.  This program is conducted by the Wood County Educational Service Center.

Students are invited to attend one day at the program with no cost and parents are invited to visit with their child.  For questions, please call Senior Team Leader, Vinnie Snyder at 419-666-3023 or 419-308-2597.
