Haskins Student Activities

Leadership Activities for students vary throughout the school year and are offered to students of all ages / grade levels.  Listed below is a brief description of each activity.

Crossing Guards

We have several volunteer crossing guards that monitor students in the morning as students arrive at school and in the afternoon during dismissal. The Haskins police assisted with he training of the crossing guards and monitor our guards from the police cruiser nearly every day.  Crossing guards rotate duties every month. They are invited to a luncheon or breakfast every grading period and are recognized at our awards ceremony at the end of the school year.

Summer Reading and Fitness Initiative - 2008

Students have an opportunity to record reading and fitness activities ALL SUMMER long!  We will collect their activity  logs in the office in the beginning of the school year and honor students on the morning announcements and with special treats.  In years past, students have been honored with ice cream parties, gift certificates, and items such as playground balls and new board games for the class.

Reading A-Z

In coop with BGSU, the Reading A-Z program is a supplimental reading program that provides one-on-one or small group instruction to students throughout the day.  It's goal is t improve students' reading ability through leveled instruction.

Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl is a team of 5 & 6 graders (6-8 members). The team is selected following a written and oral competition.  Practices are held in the morning before school, twice per week, and we have 8 after-school matches January through March with surrounding area schools. A tournament is held in April to determine a league champion.

Office Workers

Office workers are students from the 5th and 6th grades that work in the office during their noon recess. They help answer the phone and pass out mail. All 5th and 6th graders will have an opportunity to work in the office.

Cafeteria Workers

Cafeteria workers are students from the 5th and 6th grades that work in the cafeteria serving food and helping the cook. They learn about food handling safety, food preparation and foodservice guidelines. All 5th and 6th graders will have the opportunity to work in the cafeteria .
Ohio Reads Grant

Our Ohio Reads Volunteer Grant coordinator provides us with funds to organize volunteers to support staff in classroom literacy development, Reading Recovery Intervention, volunteer coordination, and Accelerated Reader enhancement.

A-Team

The A-team consists of students that get all A's on their progress report or get very high Accelerated Reader scores in a given grading period. Students are invited to a special luncheon or breakfast at Haskins Inn or in the Starlight Room at school.

B.U.G.S.

This is a student recognition program sponsored by Burger King. Each grading period students that raise a subject grade by two letter grades or two subjects by one letter grade are invited to eat with the principal at Burger King. They are transported by bus to Burger King in Bowling Green where they are treated to a breakfast. Burger King provides this to Haskins students at no charge.

Student Council

This is a student leadership organization which encourages student participation in organizing various student lead activities. Officers are selected in May for the upcoming school year. They petition to run for an office, give a simple speech in front of the student body and then are elected by a voting ballot from students.
Each 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classroom may send a male and a female representative to student council meetings. Activities include: Pet Show, Bake Sale to raise money for Christmas presents for the needy, Cookie Dough sale (to provide an all school activity such as CoSci), Random Acts of Kindness Week, Easter Egg Hunt, Visit the Cherry Street Mission, Craft making at the nursing home, Talent Show, Grandparents Day, and many other activities throughout the year.
