after school matches January through March with surrounding area
schools. A tournament is
held in April to determine a league champion.
Crossing Guards
We have volunteer crossing guards from grades 5 and
6 that monitor
students in the morning as students arrive at school and in the
afternoon during dismissal. Crossing guards rotate duties every
week. They are treated with a reward at the end of each week and
receive hot chocolate on cold mornings. And they are recognized at
our awards ceremony at the end of the school year.
Ohio Reads After School Program
Grand Rapids Elementary School received a grant to
hire a building Volunteer Coordinator to organize and run an
after-school reading program for students. In this program
students stay after school one or two days a week and work with a
volunteer tutor for about one hour each session. The Coordinator's
responsibility is to recruit and train the volunteers and obtain and
organize the teaching materials. Volunteers include parents,
community members, school employees, high school and middle school
students.
Student Council
This is a student leadership organization which
encourages student participation in organizing various student led
activities. Officers are
selected in the fall from grades 4 - 6. Each grade level is asked
to nominate six students. Students narrow the field to 3 candidates.
Elections then take place to elect officers.
Activities include a
Veteran's Day Assembly, Spiritwear Sale, and Staff
Appreciation Week, talent shows, book sales and food drives. Events spontaneously taken on during the past
year include raising cash
and clothing donations for local familes who lost everything in house
fire.
