Ducks found in Wood County are surface feeding or pond ducks. They are mostly fresh water ducks that feed on aquatic plants and seeds by "tipping up" with their heads below the surface and tails pointing up. Males are often patterned around the head but females are most often brown. Loons are large water birds with strong, pointed bills and thick necks. They are midway in size between a duck and a goose. They fly more slowly than any duck with rapid, fairly deep wingbeats. They dive rapidly and can swim long distances under water. Loons are northern birds that feed on fish and usually are only seen in Wood County when migrating. Herons are large wading birds that can be seen along the rivers and ditches in Wood County. They have sharp pointed bills, slender necks, and large, rounded wings. They fly with their necks drawn in and legs extended. Herons eat crayfish, small fishes, and other invertebrates. |
