Herons

Herons fly slowly with regular complete up and down motion.  They are among the largest birds that wade in the water looking for fish to prey upon.

Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias

Great Blue Herons find there way to Ohio only because they are on their way to the Artic areas of Canada.  They migrate back and forth to breed.  They feed on fish while walking in shallow water.  Their call is similar to the Canadian Goose call.

Green Heron
Butorides striatus

The Green Heron has a smaller, wider neck than the Blue Heron.  Furthermore, It doesn't have the length of Blue Herons body nor the length of its legs.  It is very common in the Eastern states and usually more common than the Great Blue Heron in this area.  It has green flight feathers and a maroon neck.
