Gar

Gars are long cigar-shaped fishes, olive above, gray below, and with thick diamond shaped scales. They are predators and have beaklike jaws with sharp, pointed teeth. They frequent large streams and rivers and shallow weedy lakes where they spawn in the spring. 

Description:
Size, to 44 in. Large dark spots on top of head. Snout broad, longer than rest of head but not twice as long.
Habitat:
Clear, weedy lakes and bayous.
Range:
Lakes Michigan and Erie, and Mississippi River drainage to Gulf of Mexico.
