House Finch
Carpodacus mexicanus

Finches have strong, short, conical bills adapted for eating seeds, a major item in their diet which often includes berries, fruits, buds, and insects. House Finches were apparently released on western Long Island in 1940. They spread rapidly and were widely established by 1970. They may be replacing the Purple Finch whose numbers have diminished.
