Crappies

Description:
Size, usually 7 - 12 in.; rod and reel record, 5 lb. Body greenish with black blotches; base of dorsal fin as long as distance from eye to dorsal fin; dorsal fin spines, 6 - 10.
Habitat:
Clear, quiet water with mud or sand bottoms and submerged vegetation.
Food: Small fishes, insects.
Remarks:
Nest in 3 - 6 ft. of water on sandy or mud bottom among plants; eggs laid in late spring.
Range:
Across south Canada from upper St. Lawrence River to Manitoba; south through east and central U.S. to Florida and Texas. Widely stocked by state conservation departments.
