Common Loon
Gavia immer

Loons are large and long.  They look similar to a duck but they have a short neck and pointed bill.  They are remarkable divers therefore they are seen in deep, freshwater lakes.  When they float on the water they sink farther down than ducks.  Usually only their head is visible when they do this.  In summer the Loon has a dark black head and rarely visible spotting.  In the Winter this changes to more of a gray with no spotting.
