Chiroptera (Bats)

Bats are the only mammals that fly. Their fingers, arms, legs, and tail are connected by a double layer of skin that make up their wings. Bats produce high pitched sounds that humans cannot hear. When bats produce these sounds, they listen for the echo of the sound to help them locate insects or avoid obstructions. Thus bats can hunt in the dark and do most of their feeding during the hours just after dark. During the winter, bats hibernate here in Wood County.
