Description:

Size,
usually 8 - 12 in. Body brown, chunky; belly yellow; jaws about
equal, chin barbels white. Rear edges of pectoral spines sharply
barbed. |

Habitat:

Shallow
waters of large ponds, lakes, and streams. |

Remarks:
|
In
May and June, up to 3000 eggs laid in nests in shallow water;
parents guard the fry. |

Southeast
North Dakota to Vermont, south to Mexico and Florida. |
