The word "amphibian" is derived from the Greek amphibios meaning with a double life and refers to an animal that lives alternately on land and in water. Amphibians of today are descendants of an ancient group that first appeared in the fossil record 360 million years ago during the Devonian Period. Amphibians in general have a soft, moist skin lacking scales; their eggs lack a protective shell; and they typically develop through an aquatic larval stage followed by transformation into an adult that may be amphibious or wholly aquatic. There are three types of amphibians that live in wood county. The three types of amphibians are Frogs, Toads, and Salamanders.
