NEWS & UPDATES
OTSEGO PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL RACE TO THE TOP (RttT) FUNDING (Oct. 29, 2010)
Otsego Schools were awarded $100,000 over four years from the National Race to the Top Program (RttT). To access these funds, Ohio requires schools to submit a proposal that outlines the programs the local school would like to implement to improve student learning with the RttT money.
The Otsego District Leadership Team (DLT), representing teachers from all grade levels and administrators, met last year to review data and determine district needs for improvement of student learning. The DLT decided to focus on three main initiatives: 1) implement a set of research-based instructional teaching strategies (Marzano) in all buildings; 2) develop and administer common assessments at all grade levels; and 3) research and develop new ways to provide annual teacher and administrator evaluations.
The proposed timeline starts Marzano training in 2010-2011, develops assessments in 2012-2014, and begins research into teacher and administrator evaluations in 2012 with finalized evaluations in 2014.
This school year teachers will participate in the training for the instructional strategies that Robert Marzano's research has shown to likely increase student learning when implemented appropriately. These nine teaching approaches include: (1)Setting Objectives & Providing Feedback; (2)Reinforcing Effort & Providing Recognition; (3)Cues, Questions & Advanced Organizers; (4)Cooperative Learning; (5)Non-Linguistic Representation; (6)Summarizing & Note Taking; (7)Generalization & Testing Hypothesis; (8)Homework & Practice; and (9)Identifying Similarities and Differences.
The DLT believes these teaching practices will continue to improve Otsego student performance. By November 5, 2010 our district will have feedback about whether the plan is approved, approved with conditions, or in need of revision. By December 1, 2010 the funds should be accessible to our district pending our approval.
A key requirement of RttT funding is a commitment to communicate with Otsego staff and community members regarding the use of the RttT funding. The Otsego website has a link to the District Leadership Team information and will maintain an itemized list detailing the expenditures of various programs when the spending is approved. Also, the DLT is committed to communicating how the programs are helping and shaping the Otsego School District.
District Leadership Team meets to discuss submission of Scope of Work (Oct. 5, 2010)
Otsego Schools were awarded $100,000 over four years due to the National Race to the Top Program (RttP). To access these funds, Ohio requires schools to submit a proposal called the Scope of Work. This document outlines the programs that Otsego would like to implement to improve student learning with the RttP money.
The District Leadership Team (DLT) met last year to discuss main areas where the school should improve. During that time, the DLT decided to focus on three main initiatives:
1) implement Marzano teaching strategies in all buildings;
2) develop and administer common formative assessments at all grade levels; and
3) research and develop new ways to provide annual teacher and administrator evaluations.
The DLT proposed a timeline that starts Marzano training in 2010-2011, development of formative assessments in 2012-2014, and research into teacher and administrator evaluations starting in 2012 with finalized evaluations in 2014. LEA Scope of Work must be submitted by October 22, 2010.
By November 5, 2010 our district will have feedback about whether the plan is Approved, Approved with Conditions, or In Need of Revision. By December 1, 2010 the funds should be accessible by our district pending our approval.
A key requirement of RttP funding is a commitment to communicate with Otsego staff and Community members regarding the use of the RttP funding. On this website, the DLT will maintain an itemized list detailing the expenditures of our various programs when the spending is approved. Also, they are committed to communicating how our programs are helping and shaping the Otsego School District.
DLT RttP Mission Statement
The Otsego Local School District will strive to improve student learning, PreK-12, through the continuing development of highly effective educators, appropriate use of assessment, and implementation of research-based instructional strategies.
