Word Processing - How Do I . . .?

Make a blank line? 1 Press the ENTER key.
Go down?  2 If you already have something typed, use your arrow keys or mouse to move down.  If nothing is typed yet, you will have to use the ENTER key.  Gr 4
Add another line at the top?  I need to put my name on the first line instead of the title.  3 Place the cursor at the very beginning of the document.  Press the enter key (you now have a blank line).  Click on that new blank line.  Start typing. Gr 4

Get it to stop erasing what I already have typed?  I just want to stick something in.  4

Pressing the INSERT key changes between insert mode and overstrike mode. In insert mode, all characters typed are placed at the cursor position (or to the right of the insertion point). As you type, anything to the right of the cursor moves to the right to make room for the new typing. If insert mode is turned off, typing then overwrites (erases) the old characters instead of putting the new ones before the old ones. This is often called overwrite mode. Most PC keyboards have an Ins or Insert key that lets you switch back and forth between insert and overwrite modes.  Many word processing programs display OVR in a status bar at the bottom when overwrite mode is on. Gr 4
Indent a paragraph? 5 Press the tab key once at the beginning of a paragraph.  If you forgot to do this before you started typing the paragraph, just put the cursor at the beginning of the paragraph anytime and press the tab key once. Gr 4
Get the typing back at the left?  I added my name at the top, but now it's centered like the title; I need my name at the left and the title in the center. 7 Click anywhere on the line you want to be LEFT aligned.  In the toolbar click the ALIGN LEFT button. Gr 4
Get the paragraph back to the left?  After I indented it looks like the whole paragraph moved to the right. 8 Click in the paragraph.  In the ruler, change the left margin by dragging the margin marker to the correct location. Gr 4
Correct Incorrect Incorrect
End a page so I can start typing on the next page, even though there's still room on the page I was typing on for more? 9 Press the enter key to get beneath what you last typed.  Then while holding down the control key, press the enter key again.  You should now be on a new empty page within the document you are typing in. Gr 5
Add a text box to a document or add a caption beneath a picture? Click here for details.
Get everything back?  Somehow I erased everything. If you just erased it, immediately go to EDIT in the menu bar and click UNDO.  The keyboard shortcut for UNDO is Control Z.  Remember the control key is CTRL.
Reverse undo?  I didn't mean to UNDO. CTRL Y (While holding down the control key, press the letter Y and then let go of both keys.)
Get the indent back closer to the left?  It's way over almost to the middle now. Make sure the cursor is in the paragraph.  Remove the tabs by dragging them off the ruler.  Default tabs of half-inch will still be set, you just won't see the marker on the ruler.
Make it so the first line of typing is more to the left than the rest of the text? Click in the paragraph.  In the ruler, drag the "left indent marker" to the right (the "first line indent" marker always moves with the "left indent marker").  Now, move the "first line indent" marker back to the left (the "left indent marker" should stay where you placed it). Gr 6

Bulleted List - Make it so the first line of typing is more to the left than the rest of the text? Highlight all lines in the bulleted list.  In the ruler, drag the "left indent marker" to the right (the "first line indent" marker always moves with the "left indent marker").  Now, move the "first line indent" marker back to the left (the "left indent marker" should stay where you placed it).  Insert (or move) a tab between the first line indent and the left indent. Gr 7-8

Numbered List - Make it so all items' text aligns at the same spot, even lines with larger numbers? Highlight all lines in the numbered list.  In the ruler, drag the "left indent marker" to the right (the "first line indent" marker always moves with the "left indent marker").  Now, move the "first line indent" marker back to the left (the "left indent marker" should stay where you placed it).  Insert (or move) a tab between the first line indent and the left indent so there is space after the number's period before the text in the numbered list. Gr 7-8
