Windows XP
(new Dell computers and some old upgraded Ultra computers)

First time use - you must Install a Network Printer

My Network Places - create shortcut:

There is not a shortcut on the desktop when you log on with your own username and password.  To access My Network Places (similar to Network Neighborhood) click on the Start button, click My Documents (on the right at the top), click My Network Places (in the blue column on the left).  To then get to your own folder click Entire Network (in the blue column on the left), click Microsoft Windows Network that appears on the right side (you have been working in the left column), click Otsegoland, click GRE1 or HES1 or WES1, continue the path until you get to your folder.

To create a shortcut, right mouse click on the desktop, click Properties, click the Desktop tab, click the Customize Desktop button, put a check mark in the My Network Places check box and any others you want, click Ok, click OK again.

Security/Permissions: Unlike older operating systems (Windows 95 & 98), you will not be able to download or install most programs - an administrative password is required.  Unfortunately, you will not be able to perform Windows updates.  If you need Acrobat Reader, Office, Inspiration (not Kidspiration) or Primary Fonts installed, it is OK to email Kathy Bradley kbradley@otsegoknights.org .  Building specific programs such as Kidspiration, Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, Wiggle Works, etc. that you need installed should be requested of the building staff member responsible for that program (not Kathy or Craig).  Any other programs, be sure you have all licenses, paperwork, etc. before emailing the request to Craig ots_aca_cfl@nwoca.org .

Programs:  Old programs requiring 256 colors should not be used in Windows XP computers.  Before purchasing new programs be sure to check the system specifications of both the computer and the software and contact Craig.  Sometimes older versions of programs are sold at a greatly reduced price, but they would not be able to run in the Windows XP environment properly.

Reminder:  Be sure to log off when you are finished using your folder/files.
