General Steps to Make a Graph:


The following instructions will walk you through each step necessary to complete the graphing assignments during computer class.  Click on the example to open the instructions.


Single Column

In class you used this to show the Type of items, taking the information from the pictures of large items ONLY


Pie


Multiple Column

In class you used this to show the size and type of items, taking the information from the pictures of large and small items.

Please read these "reminders" about line graphs before you start your graph.

Line Graph

In class you used this to show the change of something (plant growth, temperature, and other topics) over a period of time (days, weeks, years) taking the data from an informative paragraph.

How To  
Increase Column Width Click in the column header (not in the cells) on the line between the two column letters, then drag the line to the right to make the column wider. or use
Auto Fit - after you have entered the information, click on a cell in the column that needs to be wider, in the Menu Bar click Format, click Column, click AutoFit Selection.

If there is a lot of text so that increasing the column width would take up too much space, "wrap text" instead.  To do this, click in the cell, in the menu bar click Format, click Cells, click the Alignment tab, under text control put a check mark in the box by Wrap Text.

Edit (Change) Information in a Cell Click on the cell, click in the entry bar and make changes just as if you were in a word processing program.  When you are finished, press the enter key; or click in a different cell.
Delete Information in a Cell Click in the cell, then press the space bar. [or Click in the cell, click on Edit in the Menu Bar, click Clear, click Contents.]  Please do not press the "delete" key - it removes all formatting (bold, borders, etc.) as well as the information you had typed.
Delete a Column or Row Click on the Column Letter Header or the Row Number Header to highlight it, in the Menu Bar click Edit, click Delete.
Change Font Size or Style Highlight the cell(s) and make changes just as if you were in a word processing program.  When you are finished, press the enter key; or click in a different cell.
Insert Rows Highlight the row(s) beneath where you want to add a row, then click on Insert in the Menu Bar, click Rows. (If you highlight row 2, you will make a new row 2 and old row will become row 3.) If you want to insert 4 rows you would highlight the 4 rows beneath where you want the new rows, 
Insert Columns Highlight the column(s) to the right of where you want to add a row, then click on Insert in the Menu Bar, click Rows. (If you highlight column B, you will make a new column B and old column B will become column C.) If you want to insert 4 columns you would highlight the 4 columns to the right of where you want the new columns, 

Exercise - Insert a Total Column and make a pie chart

Print only a Graph Click on the graph, go to Print Preview, if it looks correct, click Print.
Print the information and the graph on the same page Click in an empty cell (not on the graph), go to Print Preview, if it looks correct, click Print.
Fill series (make a Countdown) Just type two days (months, numbers, etc.), highlight them, using the small + at the lower right corner of the selection outline drag down or over and the program will fill in the rest of the information into the selected cells.

AutoFit After you have entered the information, click on a cell in the column that needs to be wider, in the Menu Bar click Format, click Column, click AutoFit Selection. 
Show Decimals
Before After To make the decimals appear in all entries which makes them easier to read:  Highlight the cells that need to show decimals, then, in the Menu Bar click Format, click Cells, click the Number tab, click Number in the Category list, type a number in the "decimal places" box, click OK

Change markers or the line appearance in a line graph Click here.

#### - Why do I just see dollar signs? The calculated number needs a wider column to be displayed - increase the column width.
It shows a date instead of what I typed - how can I fix it? Format - Cells - Number Tab - choose general or number (type a number in the "decimal places" box) depending on whether you want just words or just a number, click OK
Show or hide gridlines click here

Add clipart or any other graphic Just like in Word, but there's a bonus-you don't have to format the picture layout to square to be able to move it!
