It is hoped that anyone using the lab
(teachers, staff, helpers, volunteers, University students, etc.)
will abide by and enforce these Computer Lab Rules.

GENERAL RULES

NO FOOD in the computer lab.

NO DRINKS in the computer lab.

NO GUM in the computer lab.

If you have received a treat or reward of gum, suckers, candy, peanuts, cookies, cupcakes, or food of any type just before coming to the computer lab SAVE IT FOR LATER.  No matter who gave it to you or when they gave it to you... FOOD, DRINKS, GUM are not to be in the lab.

BEHAVIOR RULES

LISTEN QUIETLY to all instructions before touching your computer.  Do not turn the computer off without permission.  Use correct exit procedures.

RESPECT OTHERS - Do not bother classmates. Remain quiet.  Remain in proper keyboarding position; this will help you to avoid pressing incorrect keys with your arms.  Do not “drum” on tables, chairs, etc.  Most reading should be silent.  Try not to sing aloud with the program.  Please avoid outbursts.  DO NOT TOUCH YOUR NEIGHBORS’ COMPUTER.  You may verbally help them, but do not do it for them.

CALMLY, QUIETLY, AND QUICKLY exit and save properly, remove the CD if necessary, clear your work area, remain in your seat until asked to line up, push in your chair.  Line up in the same manner.

REMAIN IN THE COMPUTER LAB until you are given permission to leave, even when class is over.  If you leave during class for the restroom or to get a drink it must be an emergency and you must have a hall pass.

REMAIN TOGETHER as a computer class when going to and from the lab, as well as during a fire drill.  Walk calmly and quietly in single file without bothering others that may be in the hall.

KEEP YOUR MOUTH EMPTY.  Don’t put anything in your mouth - fingers, pencils, paper, paperclips, erasers, toys, etc.  Of course, no food, gum, candy, etc. is permitted in the computer lab, no matter who gave you the candy, even if you just received it before coming to the computer lab.

KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM YOUR FACE AND HEAD. This may sound like a strange rule, but it will help us prevent additional germ spreading as we share keyboards throughout the day.  When your hands are near your mouth or nose, they get germs on them; if you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth you might spread germs.  Tissues are available for your use (you don’t have to ask to get up and get one) – just be sure you dispose of the tissue properly.  If you can’t get to a tissue before a sneeze or cough, please sneeze or cough into your upper sleeve instead of your bare hand.  If you do accidentally sneeze into your hand, please get permission to leave the room so you can properly wash your hands with soap before continuing to use the keyboard.

REMINDERS

All school rules apply in the computer lab.  Raise your hand before speaking, no put-downs, etc.

Be kind and polite.  No shoving, pushing, or running.  Use the words “please” and “thank you” often.

Deal with  it.  You are not necessarily in the computer lab to be entertained.  You may not always like the scheduled activity; but complaining is not acceptable.

great work ethic and attitude needs to be brought to class daily

Assignment Rules

Follow directions. READ instructions, also read the computer's comments before clicking.

Changing the appearance of a document should only be done after all steps of the writing process are complete.  Changing appearance (fonts, layout, adding pictures, etc) are part of the "publishing" step in the writing process - writing, editing, proofing, changing, correcting, rewriting, improving, checking, all must take place before "publishing".

Use Print Preview before printing.  Be sure the document is as it should be - name - usually one page and fills the page.  Don't waste paper (or ink).

Keep all papers in the printer - occasionally someone will gather and pass out the documents.  Don't go over to a printer and watch or wait for your document.

Only press Print once - be patient - because of network use there may be many print jobs in front of yours and it may take a few minutes before your document is printed.

Get permission before printing from the Internet - again, use print preview - perhaps use only selected areas - perhaps copy and paste into another document.

Keep the default font settings.  Occasionally the instructions may tell you to change the font size or style.  If you are given permission to change the font to one of your own choice, use the following Style Sheet:

Titles may use font sizes from 24 to 48
Sub-titles may use font sizes from 16 to 20
Body text may use font sizes from 10 to 14

Appropriate fonts include: Arial
Arial Narrow
Century Gothic
Comic Sans
Times New Roman

Appropriate fonts show proper capitalization, is printed (not cursive) and can be easily read by everybody.

Unacceptable fonts include Algerian
Copperplate
Gigi
Harlow
Matura
Mistral
Old English Text
Script
Stencil
Vladimir
Wingdings (Wingdings)
     or similar fonts

If a font is not installed on a computer, it will not appear the same as it does on the computer used to generate the text.

Italics and bold are used only to bring attention to a word or phrase.  Do not use italics or bold entirely throughout an article.
Two different fonts should be the maximum used in a document.  More fonts than that will possibly distract the reader and become annoying. Be careful of the combination of fonts used - they should compliment each other.
Font colors should be easy to read.  Don't use too many colors.  If more than one color is used be sure the color combination is easy to read and doesn't hurt the eyes.  Black is the preferred font color (for printing purposes); be sure to obtain permission before changing font color.
Alignment of body text should be left or justified.  Titles and headings can be either centered or aligned left.
A picture should always face the article to bring attention to the picture and the article.  If a picture faced away from the article it might encourage the reader to roam off the article or confuse the picture with the wrong article.

EQUIPMENT RULES

TREAT ALL EQUIPMENT PROPERLY.  Be patient during program use; do not pound on the keyboard or press space or return continually; do not press Print more than once unless told to do so.  Be sure to read all information provided on your screen.  Pencils are for writing on paper only; use only fingertips to press keys.  Do not change monitor adjustments or any computer settings including background, colors, screen saver, etc. Do not move headphones or speakers (not all computers have jacks for both) from one computer to another - if a computer does not have headphones it could be a signal that sound is not working at that computer.

TREAT ALL DISKS PROPERLY.  Only touch the edges, be sure they are properly in the drive, only remove them after the program has been properly closed.

KEEP EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE - disks, worksheets, pencils, clipboards, scrap paper.  Place CD’s in their storage container (case, envelope, box).  Please have labels up so the next person can read them.  Have all papers stacked going the same direction with the same side up.  Look around your area before leaving to see if there is anything that should be taken care of or thrown away.

USE YOUR CHAIR PROPERLY AND SAFELY.  Keep all chair legs on the floor.  Sit in your chair properly.  Use the chair that is in front of your computer.  Keep still.

CONTROL YOUR FEET.  Keep feet off the wall and electrical outlets and cords.  Also keep feet off chairs (even if no one is sitting in it) and tables.   Proper keyboard position requires feet flat on the floor in front of you.

Properly exit programs.

Last class of the day should follow correct shut-down procedures.  Be sure to turn the monitor off after the tower has shut itself off (you don't have to press the on/off button on the tower to shut down).

Keep power centers on.  Whether it is a power center under the monitor, or a power strip on the table or floor, do not turn off any of its buttons.  If you turn off something on the power center/strip it may be very difficult for someone to realize which one has been turned off and they may think the equipment has a problem.

Chair Rules

ADJUST THE HEIGHT of your chair, as soon as you enter the lab. To lower the chair you must remain seated while you lift the lever on the right side of the chair seat; if you are not able to lower your chair, silently raise you hand and someone will help you by lightly pushing the chair down while you are sitting on it. To make the chair higher lift the lever on the right side of the chair seat while raising yourself off the seat. Once class begins you are not to be changing its height.

KEEP THE CHAIR STILL.  You will occasionally have to move (roll or glide) slightly but don’t move unnecessarily or abruptly.

Partial turns are sometimes necessary to see things.  Do not make a complete rotation.

In addition to general consequences, you may lose the use of a chair for the remainder of that class time.  If that happens you will be expected to stand or kneel straight and still as you continue your computer work.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

COURTESY to everyone all the time.  Be considerate.  Please don’t talk when someone else “has the floor” - give the speaker (classmate or teacher) your full attention. If an adult enters the room, continue working QUIETLY.  Courtesy includes not running into the room, no pushing, shoving, etc. to be first in line.  Move out of people’s way instead of making them move.  Let the one class leave the room before you start entering the room. Courtesy includes volunteering for things and the use of polite words:   “Please” and “Thank You”;  “Yes, ma’am” or “No ma’am” or “Yes, sir” or “No sir” , etc.

RESPECT people and equipment.  This includes not making comments under your breath, rolling your eyes, laughing at others, etc. as well as not banging on the keys, be sure to exit programs properly.  Please do not touch anyone else’s computer - if you help someone, do it verbally by telling them how to do something rather than doing it for them.

Keep it neat.  If you see something on the floor or out of place, take care of it even though it probably isn’t yours or wasn’t done by you.  When placing items (papers, CD’s) in a stack please make sure they are all in the same direction.  Before you leave the lab, slide the chair all the way in so its back touches the edge of the table.
