Hall of Fame - Each grading period you can qualify for your building's keyboarding Hall of Fame.  Try to earn it each of the four quarters - Practice!  See the requirements.

Make sure you know the Story of Eight Fingers and can apply it to your fingers as you use the keyboard.

If you don't remember what these pictures represent, ask a classmate, or Mrs. Bradley.  Letters in orange (above) are seven of the home keys, the eighth home key is the semi-colon for the right little finger.

Pointer fingers are placed on F and J - notice the PC keyboard has a raised bump or line that you can feel without looking at the keyboard or your fingers - that's why it is called "Touch Typing".

PRACTICE IS MANDATORY
Practice with a towel or 
paper over your hands so 
you cannot see the keys.

Grade Level Requirements

Words Per Minute Goals - WPM

4th Grade - 6-9 correct words per minute
5th Grade - 8-11 correct words per minute
6th Grade - 10-13 correct words per minute
Middle School - 18 words per minute with no errors
High School Graduation -  25 words per minute with no errors

Skills Required

4th, 5th, and 6th Graders

Demonstrate proper posture and eye position

Use two hands while typing or appropriate adaptation for special needs

Know which keys are right side keys and which keys are left side keys

Understand stroking technique - light touch

Use right hand thumb to press the space bar

Use right little finger to press return

Use one finger from each hand to make an upper case letter or the upper character on a key - while a little finger presses the shift key, the correct finger on the other hand presses the character key

Use the correct fingers on each home row key

Use the correct fingers on the QWERTY row keys

Use the correct fingers on the bottom row keys

Use anchoring technique to help return fingers to home position

Use the correct fingers on the number keys at the top of the alphabetic keyboard - only use the numeric keypad for drill and practice programs, not keyboarding or word processing

Demonstrate ability to use special function keys:  Spacebar, Shift, Return, Arrow keys, Backspace, Tab

Locate and use keys: Escape, Shift, Control, Alternate, Caps lock, Delete

Demonstrate ability to identify and type punctuation keys: Period, Comma, Question Mark, Exclamation Mark

Demonstrate ability to identify and type punctuation keys: Quotation Marks, Apostrophe
