Hypermedia

PowerPoint Jeopardy United Streaming Make a Video Web Page - Front Page School Notes

Hypermedia is a user-friendly way to connect related information (text, graphics, photographs, sound, and video). Hypermedia uses special "links" you can click on to jump from one related topic to another. Multimedia is a powerful blend of text, graphics, sound, animation, and video on your computer, but not necessarily interactive.

United Streaming

To begin, at the NWOCA home page, click the United Streaming Logo (in the middle of page)
Login.  The first time you use United Streaming you will need to enter the building passcode (that was emailed to you fall 2003) and set up an account for yourself.
You may Search for various video clips.  Many times a large video is broken down into smaller segments for your convenience.
Each clip provides Blackline Masters, Correlations, and Teacher's Guide - click your choice. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader
For each video you may Stream (view without saving), Download (save to a location of your choice), or Add to PlayList (bookmark for later retrieval).  Click on the S, D, or A.  To include in a PowerPoint presentation you will need to Download.
Download United Streaming

Right click on the "d" next to the clip you want (the pop-up menu will appear).

On the pop-up menu, click
"Save Target As.."

Use the network to  get to your folder  on the server (for your use only) or the appropriate grade "materials" folder on the server (if you want someone else to use the video clip).  Type in a different file name if you want (use the same file extension though); click Save.

For more information, and features (calendar correlations, image library, etc.)
refer to the online Users Guide.
United Streaming Video Clips in PowerPoint
It is recommended that the downloaded clips and the presentation be saved in the same folder within your folder on the server.  For student use of the PowerPoint presentation, make the files read-only.  It is OK to make a folder in the graduation year folder to hold a copy of the presentation and video clip files - students may access the presentation from this folder.
To insert the saved video clip into a PowerPoint presentation: in the menu bar click Insert, click Movies and Sound, click Movie from file, locate the file, double click it, you will probably want to click Yes so the movie will play automatically.  You may resize the video on the slide.
For younger students you may prefer to make the presentation fully automatic.  In the Slide Show menu, select Slide Transitions, click automatic, after xx seconds, remove the checkmark by On Mouse Click, click OK.  To get the correct number of seconds either type in the length of the video clip (if you know), or Rehearse Timings.
To rehearse your timings, just click Rehearse Timings on the Slide Show menu. You can use the buttons in the Rehearsal dialog box to pause between slides, restart a slide, and advance to the next slide. PowerPoint keeps track of how long each slide appears and sets the timing accordingly. When you finish, you can accept the timings or you can try again.

Your Own Web Presence - SchoolNotes

SchoolNotes is an alternative to "your own web page".  Using SchoolNotes you may easily communicate with students and parents via the Internet.
It is easy to use, free, and used by several of our elementary teachers in each building so help is readily available.
Realize there are not a lot of features for "free" users, but it is still effective.
You'll need to know your building zip code:
GRE-43522   WES-43569   HES-43525

A Bit of Trivia - Hypertext is a term coined by Ted Nelson around 1965 for a collection of documents containing cross-references or "links" which, with the aid of an interactive browser program, allow the reader to move easily from one document to another.
