Direction
Be sure the graphic leads the viewer's eyes to the text. If the picture has eyes, they should be looking toward the text; if the graphic is something that moves, it should seem that it is moving into the words (people or animals walking, running, leaning; cars, trucks, airplanes

Placement
Be sure the graphic is not too near the edge of the paper. Look at the margins in the ruler - imagine that gray area is extended down both sides of your paper - nothing should be in the imaginary gray area. Read more about margins.
It should be within the text, but it is usually best to not have it in the center of the text since it is difficult for some people to read if a line of text is broken. Also, it is best to place the graphic within the paragraph low enough that at least the first line of the paragraph goes all the way across the page. Remember, to be able to move the picture you must click on it, then go to Format - Picture - Layout - Square - OK. Don't place the graphic underneath the text all by itself unless you were told to do so.
